About JAR

デンバー近郊に住むある日本人のお母さんが、我が子が日本語を話す子供達と楽しく遊べる環境を求めて呼びかけて集まった３組の親子達とプレイデートを始めました。アメリカに永住する日本人の親を持つ子供達はどうしても現地語である英語が強くなってしまう。このプレイデートはそんな悩みを持つ日本人の親御さんの共感を得て次第に大きくなり、幼児を対象とした日本語教室へと進化しました。その後口コミで生徒数を増やした教室は２００６年に非営利団体ロッキーズ日本語アカデミーとして正式に設立されました。翌２００７年にはコロラド大学ボルダー校の日本語専任講師を務めるシブリ久子をディレクターに迎え、２０２４年現在では２歳児から大人まで約１５０人の生徒が日本語を学んでいます。

In the beginning, there was a small group of Japanese mothers living in the area. They started organizing playdates for their young children, creating a space where children growing up in Denver could interact in Japanese and enjoy themselves. These mothers quickly recognized the necessity and value of a supportive environment where their children could freely speak Japanese. As the group attracted more families, it transformed into the Japanese Academy of the Rockies. Formally established in the fall of 2006 as a non-profit organization, we now cater to 150 students, with ages ranging from two years old to adults.

補習校は文部科学省が管轄する日本の学校です。親の仕事や留学の都合で日本国外に滞在する日本人の子女が日本に帰国した際に日本の学校にスムーズに適応出来るように、日本のカリキュラムでの学習を続けるための学校です。

ロッキーズの生徒は住まいをアメリカとしており、日本に「帰国」する事は基本的にないので、日本で日本の学校に通い生活するための日本語ではなく、継承語としての日本語を学習しています。そのため特にリスニングとスピーキングに力を注いでいます。

ロッキーズは日本語「を」学ぶ場で、補習校は日本語「で」各教科を学ぶ学校です。

Other Japanese schools in this region are governed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. They are intended for children of Japanese nationals who reside outside Japan due to their parents' work or study abroad, to ensure that these children can smoothly adapt to Japanese schools upon returning to Japan. These schools follow the Japanese curriculum to continue the students’ education in Japan.

Students of the Japanese Academy of the Rockies are based in the United States, and they typically do not 'return' to Japan. Therefore, instead of learning Japanese for the purpose of attending and living in schools in Japan, they learn it as a heritage language. As such, a special emphasis is placed on listening and speaking skills.

The Japanese Academy of the Rockies is a place for learning the Japanese language, whereas other Japanese schools are where students learn various subjects in Japanese.

幼児部ではおおまかに年齢別のカリキュラムとなっていますが、小学生以上では習熟度別の無学年方式を採用しており、年齢にとらわれず、学習進度が近い生徒を集めたグループとクラス編成となっています。

例えば、現地校や日本の小学校一年生だからといって文科省の指導要項にある学習漢字80字の習得を目指してはいません。コミュニケーション重視の日本語教育というロッキーズの基本理念に基づき、小学校低学年の数年間かけて平仮名、カタカナ、漢字80字を、聞く•話す•ディスカッションする事で学びます。そして年齢にとらわれず、学習進度が近い生徒を集めたグループ及びクラスを編成しています。そのための年度末チェックリストを用意しているので、生徒は年度末に担任の先生のアセスメントと保護者面談にて新年度のクラスを決定する事になっています。新規入学生の場合はプレイスメントテストがあります。

またロッキーズでは個人授業も提供しています。先生の人数とスケジュールに限りがあるために提供出来る保証は必ずしもありませんが、個人のニーズに合わせた日本語学習が必要な御家庭や、プラスアルファの学習を希望される御家庭はお問合せ下さい。

our elementary school and up classes adopt a non-grade system. Students are grouped together based on similar learning progress and needs, rather than by age.

For instance, first graders in elementary schools in Japan are required to learn 80 kanji characters. But we don't intend the same for our Hikari or Hayate students, because we don't need to follow the Japanese Ministry of Education's curriculum guidelines as other Japanese schools in the area do. The JAR's fundamental philosophy is to focus on communication-based Japanese language education. So we aim for our students to learn hiragana, katakana, and 80 kanji characters through listening, , speaking, and discussion over a few years instead of just one year.

Every student receives an assessment at the end of the school year, which, along with a parent-teacher conference, determines their class for the following year. New students are placed in appropriate classes after taking a placement test.

The Japanese Academy of the Rockies also offers private and online lessons. Although we cannot guarantee their availability due to limited teacher numbers and schedules, families who need personalized Japanese language learning or who wish for additional learning opportunities are welcome to inquire.

ロッキーズでは高校卒業時までの目標を、AP Japanese のスコア3以上の取得と、高校卒業時のSeal of Biliteracyの獲得とし、AP受験対策クラスをオファーしています。これまでもロッキーズの多くの卒業生がこの賞を受け取り、自身の日本語への自信と誇りにつながっています。AP Japaneseの受験はあくまでも任意ですが、受験をしない場合でも日本の人文社会の知識に触れながら日本語のコミュニケーション能力としての読み書き、聞く話す力を伸ばしていける受験対策クラスのカリキュラムの恩恵を受ける事が出来ます。

The goal for our students is to achieve a score of 3 out of 5 or higher on the AP Japanese exam, and to obtain the Seal of Biliteracy by the time of high school graduation. We offer AP prep classes for those who are interested. Many JAR graduates have received this certification, and it boosts the students' self-confidence and they feel proud of being multilingual speakers. Taking the AP Japanese is entirely optional, but even those who choose not to take the AP exam can benefit from our prep classes. Students can learn a wide range of humanities and social knowledge in Japanese, and they really enhance Japanese communication skills.

Advanced Placement (AP) Japanese

APは高校在学中に大学レベルの授業を履修する事で、APテストにパスすると大学1年生レベルの授業単位として認められるシステムです。どのAP単位をどれだけ認めるかは大学によって異なりますが、全米で広く取られています。日本語だけでなく様々な外国語を含めた幅広い科目のAPテストがあります。

Advanced Placement (AP),  offers undergraduate university-level curricula and examinations to high school students, so that they can earn college credits while they are in high school. AP covers many subjects such as English, mathematics, science, and social studies. AP has been offering Japanese as one of the World Languages since 2007. The acceptance of AP credits and how many are recognized varies by college, but the system is widely adopted across the United States.

Seal of Biliteracy

Literacy(英語)とAP(英語以外の言語)の両方で規定以上の成績を収めた高校生にコロラド州から授与される、バイリンガルの証です。

When a student achieves a score of 3, 4, or 5 on any of the foreign language subjects including AP Japanese, and also scores above a certain level for literacy in English on standardized tests like the SAT, they are eligible to receive the Seal of Biliteracy upon high school graduation. The Seal of Biliteracy is a certification of bilingualism awarded by the State of Colorado. 

日本語の理解を深め、学習のモチベーションとすべくロッキーズでは運動会(パン食い競争、綱引き、リレーなど)やお楽しみ会(クラス毎の発表と的当てなどの各種ゲーム)などといった行事を行っています。

To deepen the understanding of Japanese and to motivate learning, the Japanese Academy of the Rockies organizes events such as Field Day (packed with fun traditional Japanese programs) and Winter Show & Festival (class presentations and various games for families).
